Kids make memories at Jiggle Jam Family Music Fest

Five-year-old McKenzie Lowry came all the way from Springfield with her grandmother to have fun at Jiggle Jam and maybe jot down a memory or two in her scrapbook.
The little girl was waiting patiently Sunday with pen and pad after listening to Mr. Stinky Feet, aka Jim Cosgrove, entertain families relaxing in the cool breeze beneath the wide canopy at Crown Center Square.
“I’m going to get an autograph and put it in my memory book,” the little fan explained.
Her sister, Addison, 4, was eager to move on to the fountains, where dozens of children were splashing on a brilliant and warm afternoon.
It added up to a sweet family weekend in Kansas City for their grandmother Judy Lowry.
“It is a great time for the kids, and I hope they keep it up,” she said. “We’ve been here for both days, and we’re staying at the Hyatt. It’s just amazing. Bands don’t always cater to kids, and they’ve been wonderful.”
That was music to the ears of organizers of the third annual Jiggle Jam Family Music Fest.
“You can tell the festival has grown,” said Keli O’Neill Wenzel, the festival’s co-founder and executive director. “People are coming for a couple of days, and the hotels are being booked.”
She estimated about 30,000 people attended the festival, which ran all day Saturday and most of Sunday.
Moms and dads pushed a fleet of strollers, their little passengers squirming when the sun got too bright. Big sisters and brothers had their faces painted, musicians encouraged everyone to dance, and vendors sold toys and princess outfits beneath tents.
And there were plenty of bounce houses. That’s what appealed to Bailey Ryne, 4, of Overland Park.
“When we’re good, we go out for a treat,” she said.
Her 7-year-old sister, Addison, said: “We came last year and thought it would be fun to come again. It’s very fun because we get to play in the water, and there are bands and lots of bounce houses.”
Their mother, Molly Ryne, said Jiggle Jam had the right formula going.
“We think it’s a safe, fun place to come as a family and enjoy the nice weather and support local vendors,” she said.
Keeping cool beneath a shady tree, Maggie Vasquez, 8, of Kansas City, and her brother Daniel, 5, were gobbling pizza slices as big as their heads — topped off with ice cream.
“It’s spicy, but I still like it,” Maggie said about her pepperoni.
True to her age, it was the simple things about Jiggle Jam that appealed to her.
“I like the fact we get to run around and play a lot,” she said.
